1 comentario Noticias

  1. Copy of letter I sent to the Argus on the day of the evotiicn. Needless to say they didn’t publish it To the Editor of the Argus, Dear Sir/Madam, I had the misfortune on Tuesday the 18th May of witnessing the singularly dismal spectacle of the forced evotiicn of the Mound’ community garden on North St Brighton.A bulldozer and a group of black block’ bailiffs dressed no doubt for maximum intimidation value as beloved by the papers when describing the Anarchists- moved in to overcome a force of vicious flower beds and planted food crops, a subversive wild life reserve and a domestic terrorist frog pond that had been placed there by Guerilla gardeners’ on a piece of land, that had been derelict, covered in rubbish and boarded up by ugly fencing for over twelve years.Ironically, one of the vehicles driven by these individuals had a car sticker for the Army charity Help for Heroes’ but there was nothing heroic about the trashing of this community space, on the contrary the wanton destruction for no good reason of something that provided pleasure to others closely resembled actions typical of the Taliban.Of course the reason why these heroic bailiffs moved in was so the owners could re assert their rights according to the laws of private property, a law which like any Taliban edict must be obeyed at all times without question regardless of the consequences. For the fact remains that despite the evident support for the mound’ garden by local residents on the day, the land does not have planning permission to be built on and doesn’t seem likely to obtain it in the near future. The land will revert to being a blighted rubbish dump which the local residents can thank the owners for. If and when planning permission is given we can be sure that it would either be for Flats, in a heavily congested area, that are unaffordable to local residents or office blocks that remain empty due to the present economic climate. The ground floor of the development would no doubt to be let to a supermarket chain of which there is a severe lack of in the town.So all in all a good day for rubble and possibly concrete but not so good for communal open spaces, gardens, local residents wishes and common sense.Yours sincerelyAndrew Fishman.
